What the Hundred Scenes charge, and when it changed

Entry prices here moved as recently as this month and as far back as 2020, and the English pages that quote them often did not move with them. This page keeps both numbers side by side: what a place charges now, what it charged before, and the day it changed.

13 dated changes, every one of them a rise. Entry charges are recorded for 15 of the 51 published scenes; a scene missing below has not been recorded yet, which is not the same as being free. Two places charge by where you live, and both are in the table. Every figure comes from a scene page on this site, where it was checked against the operator’s own notice, fare table or ordinance.

Where you pay by where you live

Two of the 51 published scenes charge visitors and residents differently, and they do it in opposite ways. Himeji Castle raised the adult ticket for non-residents from ¥1,000 to ¥2,500 on 1 March 2026 and kept it at ¥1,000 for people who live in Himeji. Miyajima adds a ¥100 visitor tax to the boat fare, which residents of the island, and anyone commuting or studying there for 48 hours a month or more, do not pay.

Rail passes sold only to overseas visitors are a different arrangement and are not counted here: they are a product you can only buy from abroad, not two prices for the same ticket.

How this page is kept

The rules we hold ourselves to

  • Both numbers, and the date. A new price on its own does not tell you whether the figure in your guidebook is out of date. The old one does.
  • From the operator. Every row traces to a scene page where the figure was checked against the place’s own notice, fare table or ordinance — not against another guide.
  • We do not say who is wrong. Where we note that English pages still carry the old figure, it is a fact about the figure, not a complaint about a publisher.
  • Missing is not free. A scene we have not recorded does not appear here at all.
  • Found one we have wrong? Tell us and we change the page, leaving the old figure in place so you can see what moved.

Get the next of the hundred.

We are writing up a hundred places in Japan, one at a time, and 51 of them are done. Every fare, last bus and best month on a page is checked before it goes up. Leave your email address and we will send you the next one when it is published.

We send nothing else, and nothing at all in a week when we publish nothing. Your address is never passed on. One line to [email protected] takes you off the list. What we store.
